This is the last week of Genius Hour, and I am pleased to say that I am done with my short animation. I am not going to say what it is about, because I want it to be a small surprise, but I will say that it doesn't really have anything to do with loving you for you. It just went a different way, but I still really like it. I am still going to show what I got done of my "New" animation, though it will not have any sound or anything like my smaller animation. I am very excited to show my animation, even though it is a little silly. I am ready to show the class and see how everybody likes it.

This week I thought more about my shorter, more enjoyable animation and I am working on it, and it is close to finished. I am planning on finishing it up this week then editing it, adding music, etc. I have enjoyed this experience of animating, as I have realized how difficult it actually is. I have only made small animations in the past, and underestimated how difficult it would be to make a full length short film on my own. I was disappointed that I couldn't finish my "New" animation because I was really passionate about its message, but it just wasn't possible, and that's not something I usually say about art. I am excited to show the class my new animation, though, and I look forward to seeing how everyone likes it.
This might seem a little late to change my project, but I'm really not changing it that much. I am still making an animation, but I am no longer working on my animation "New". It got to the point where I dreaded working on it because it wasn't fun and I was stressed about getting it done, and in my head, I imagined it how it would be in a vector animation (a computer made 2D animation) instead of a hand drawn animation, so it was just not turning out how I wanted it to and I actually hate the way it looks. I might still show it to the class just so people can see how long it takes to make something so short. I titled this post "Something New" because I am restarting a smaller animation that I am enjoying way more that actually works with hand drawn animation. It will still be about loving what makes you you except it's a little more cartoon-y and I like it a lot more than my other animation. I look forward to showing it to everyone and seeing how the class likes it!
As was predicted, I did not have any time to work on my animation in Disney World. I had an amazing time though and I wish I was still there. Anyway, I got home late Friday night and I am planning to work on my animation Monday since there is no school. One unfortunate thing I am realizing is that the animation is most likely not going to be finished by the final date of the project. I should have expected this because I am trying to do an entire hand drawn animation by myself in twelve weeks when there's usually a team of ten or fifteen people working on it and even then it takes about one to two years to create. I will try my best to finish it because I am so passionate about the topic it's on (loving yourself for who you are) and because I have such a love for art and animation, the due date is getting close, though, and we'll just have to see what happens.
This week, I got quite a bit of my animation done during the genius hour time provided in class. I am still on school scenes, but that's where the majority of the story takes place, so that's what I'll be working on the longest. I'm glad I got so much done in genius hour because I am in Disney World right now, and I don't have much time set to the side to work on it, I will try my best, though. One thing that I am seeing is that the story is going in a bit of a different direction. It's veering a little off of the script I wrote, and seems to be taking a more "artsy" route instead of a serious cut and dry short film. I think I like the way it's going, and I think the class will, too.
In my animation, we see Juniper going off to school and realizing she doesn't look exactly like everyone else, and we see the awkwardness and loneliness she feels. Now, while I know in last week's post, I said there wasn't going to be any voice acting, I changed my mind, again. Looking at the project, I realize it would be harder to put subtitles than voices, so I made the decision that I'm going to do all of the voices myself. It shouldn't be that difficult, and hopefully the results are good. I am still working hard on my animation, and I'm excited to see how it turns out!
This week was spring break, and I got to take a large section of time and work on my animation. I got a few school scenes done, and I made a large production decision. The decision I made is that there will no longer be voices. I am still going to have music, background noise, and everything like that, but when it comes to voices, I'm just going to do subtitles. It is too much with the animation for me to worry about having voices for the characters, so I decided to just have subtitles, which I personally think will have a better effect with the story than peoples voices will. I don't know about you, but when I hear a certain persons voice over a character, I can only see that person and I'm not focusing on the character themselves. Anyway, that's what I decided to do and I'm ready to finish the project and show everyone.
I got quite a bit done on my animation this past week. I am working on a big scene and I'm about half way through. This scene involves people talking so I need to get a jump on voice recording which I am planning on doing over spring break.
It's getting easier to do my animation. I am more motivated to animate now because I've finally made my way to interesting scenes after finishing the opening sequence which was really boring to draw, and I think that made me lose a lot of my motivation. I plan on doing the majority of my rough animation over spring break, and maybe finish the entire thing which would put me on the path of doing the final animation and adding color. I plan on working on it everyday of spring break until I finish an entire scene each day. I am really looking forward to getting close to the final animation and I'm looking forward to showing it to everyone! This week, I animated a few new sequences for some scenes. I animated the title scene where the title, "New", shows up, a scene where Juniper's car is driving down the road, and a scene where we pan up from Juniper's feet all the way up to her face so we can get a view of her outfit since the story takes place in the eighties, and we get a dramatic reveal of her birthmark on her face which is what the story is centered around. I'm having to skip over scenes where talking is involved because my recording room is still not done, so I have to keep waiting for that.
One thing I am finding difficult is the motivation to work on my animation. Don't get me wrong, I love animating, but it's really difficult to get excited about doing the animating when you've been doing nothing but drawing all day for your art class and doing other drawing projects for your other classes, then coming home and working on another second art project while you're still working on the first one, even though I adore drawing and working on these fun projects, it all just gets really hectic and you sort of lose what I call the "drawing bug" which is where you really feel like drawing. Something I'm finding easy is actually animating. I know I just said that I'm having a hard time finding motivation to animate, but that's the motivation. Once I get going and start drawing each frame, I get so drawn into it, I forget how much I've done and step back and realize I've done quite a bit. Overall, the animations is actually going along pretty smoothly, and I'm very excited to start working on the finalized product in a few weeks. Unfortunately, this has been another very busy week. I am continuing to move into my new house and get everything set up, we are working on putting up walls for rooms, painting, setting all of our stuff up, so it's been rather hectic. Sadly, this week I was unable to work on my animation, but I am planning to do voice recording for the characters next week. By next week, the room I am setting up to record voices in will be finished. I also plan to work on my animations every day next week and get some scenes done that don't have talking in them. As previously mentioned in other posts, it is easier to record voices before you animate mouth sequences just for the simple fact of matching up the mouths to the pre-recorded voice as opposed to vice versa. So, while I was unfortunately unable to get much done this week on my animation, I plan to work on it every day in this upcoming week and I'm really excited to get more scenes in!
